Relief for Musculoskeletal Issues Through Physiotherapy

When should you seek physiotherapy?

You should consider physiotherapy if you experience, for example:

  • neck or back pain
  • muscle tightness or stiffness
  • joint pain
  • sports injuries
  • prolonged pain
  • nerve pain

What is done in physiotherapy?

In musculoskeletal physiotherapy, targeted exercises aim to:

  • activate nerves and muscles
  • strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints
  • correct misalignments that may be contributing to the problem

Pain is often present in musculoskeletal conditions, so training begins with light exercises. In physiotherapy, suitable non-medicated pain management methods are explored together with the client. As pain begins to decrease, exercises are gradually progressed. For tissue healing, it is very important to find the right dosage of training and to commit both to cooperation with the physiotherapist and to independent exercise.

Course of treatment

During the first visit, a physiotherapeutic assessment is conducted, meaningful treatment goals are defined, a rehabilitation plan is created, and suitable home exercises are introduced.

During the second visit, the rehabilitation plan is refined if necessary, therapeutic exercises are guided, advice and support for pain management are provided, and the client receives a home exercise program.

Follow-up visits are arranged as needed. During these, correct exercise technique is ensured, progressive training is guided, progress is monitored, and other factors affecting the original issue and overall health are considered. The aim is also to add varied physical activity and improve balance, mobility, endurance, lifestyle habits, and sleep quality. Preventing recurrence of pain and other adverse health changes is an important goal.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

You can attend physiotherapy without a doctor’s referral.

Following a reform introduced in May 2025, physiotherapy is again covered by Kela support. Kela reimburses €15 per visit retrospectively, up to four times per year. You do not need a doctor’s referral for reimbursement. You first pay for the visit yourself, and the physiotherapist will provide you with a pre-filled form during your appointment. You can then apply for reimbursement from Kela.
